In England, everyone is in a hurry and nobody can wait. In africa, everyone can wait but no one can hurry. I still can't decide whether it is refreshing or incredibly annoying. I tend to swing between the two opinions. Today was one of the incredibly annoying days. We needed to get the 7am ferry from Zanzibar to Dar. You have to report at 6.30 or you may not get through and get a seat on the ferry etc. We asked our hostel to arrange a taxi for 6.15... hakuna matata/ 'no worries' ...then we checked again that they were going to call for one. They said yes yes. When we got ready to leave at 6.15... we went to reception and instead of a taxi, there was breakfast (which we didn't want but was sort of a nice thing to do i suppose) and he hadn't called the taxi yet. Then he wandered off somewhere for a while... and 10 mins later came back saying maybe we need to find you a taxi so wait and I'll find one... SOOOO not going to wait at this point. 6.25 was getting a bit close to comfort so we legged it and found our own taxi. It just wasn't for him to decide when we wanted to leave....we told him!!! So we were fairly exasperated at this point.

what a shame your Dar taxi driver doesn't have a cousin in Zanzibar! Today we went for a paddle over a 'bridge' that only shows itself at very low (spring) tides - no sign of it today. I am still reading 'Harry' and am expexcting the unexpected! We hve visited a garden of the winds with a variety of bizarre sculptures including a large roundabout thing with 2 sails - we got on and had a ride.
we start our 3 day return journey tomorrow.
have an interesting stay in Zanzibar,
love mum and dad
Hi Sal,
So did you get on the ferry? And why were you going back to Dar - I thought you'd only just got to Zanzibar! Can't believe how quickly your time there seems to be going - or maybe you can't wait to get back!
We're now back from our wet/windy/warm holiday in France - we didn't quite need to dig drainage channels like your parents but our tent was really tested out by the varying combinations of the elements! Then when it finally did clear, flooding inland had washed pollution down into the sea so we weren't allowed into the water until the last day we were there... Hope you are having better luck with the beaches in Zanzibar.
ps we only saaw one rhino during the whole year we were in Tanzania (tho' it WAS in Ngorogoro).
